Big Hole National Battlefield is a memorial to the people who fought and died here on August 9 and 10, 1877; combatants in a five month conflict that came to be called the Nez Perce. In 1992, legislation incorporated Big Hole National Battlefield with Nez Perce National Historical Park, making it part of a unique park consisting of 38 different sites located in five states; Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Big Hole National Battlefield is located ten miles west of Wisdom, Montana on state highway 43. From I-15 at Dillon, Montana take highway 287 northwest to Wisdom, then highway 43, ten miles west.. |

These spectacular gray limestone cliffs and pink and white granite formations rise 1,200 feet above the canyon floor a short way outside Anaconda. You will enjoy a short hiking trail to Lost Creek Falls cascading over a 50-foot drop to provide one of the most popular spots in the park. If you prefer a longer hike, walk up the Forest Service trail just north of the falls parking area. The trail winds for several miles along Lost Creek through forests and meadows with great views of the surrounding mountains. Wildlife, especially mountain goats and bighorn sheep, are frequently seen on the cliffs above the park. Lost Creek State Park is located on Lost Creek 18 miles from the mouth on the right hand side as you face down stream.
