Conditions : BONITO LAKE: The lake is full but needs time for aquatic habitat to develop in order to sustain a healthy fish population. The city hopes to reopen the lake for recreational purposes in June 2024.

About: - Bonito Lake is sixty acre mountain valley lake, located in Southeastern New Mexico just north of the Mescalero Apache Reservation. The lake has a good population of wild brook trout as well as few bass and carp. New Mexico Fish & Game consistently stocks Bonito with catchable-size and fingerling rainbow trout. Anglers often work the steep shoreline to cover as much of the lake as possible. Bonito is known to fish its best during the autumn months.

Camping: Campgrounds are located near the confluence of the north and south fork of Bonito Creek, the inlet to the lake.  At times the campgrounds can become crowded during the summer months.

Directions: 14 miles north of Ruidoso of N.M. S.R. 37. Take S.R. 107 turnoff an the lake approximately five miles.
