Conditions : BAY SPRINGS LAKE: The bass bite has been slow over the past few weeks, but look for it to improve as we move closer to the fall. As the days are getting shorter, fish are starting to make that fall transition which usually means the fish will be scattered. The evening bite seems to be the best. It took 12.86 pounds to win the Sunday evening, 5 fish limit tournament this past weekend with a 7.48 pound lunker weighed in. Bass anglers are reporting a shallow topwater bite around hydrilla and pondweed, but that window of opportunity is very small, early or late in the day. Light line and finesse worms on dropshot and shakeyhead rigs are catching spotted bass off deep main lake points and some secondary points. Other anglers are catching keeper largemouth on jigs and Texas/Carolina-rigged plastics along some of that same deeper structure. Some anglers are hitting the grass in search of quality largemouth. Spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and various topwater lures are popular there. Crappie anglers are still targeting the deeper brushtops around Ashcraft and McDougal Branch. Both jigs and minnows should get you some bites. The catfish reports are somewhat decent along the canal above Crow's Neck boat ramp. Just about any traditional catfish bait has been working, from cutbait to wigglers to liver.
