Conditions : Lake Maumelle: Jolly Roger’s Marina said the surface water temperature is 71 degrees and the water level is about 2 feet below the spillway. Largemouth bass are biting well on topwater lures early and late in the day and on suspending jerkbaits in 8 to 10 feet of water during midday. Spotted bass are biting well, and some are schooling. Small spoons are working well for spots. White bass have stopped schooling, but can be caught on crankbaits trolled in 15 to 20 feet of water. Crappie are biting well on pink minnows and silver jigs fished around brush in 15 to 25 feet of water. Bream are biting excellently on crickets and redworms fished in 10 to 15 feet of water around brush and artificial fishing structures. Catfishing is good on trotlines baited with small bream and hot dogs.

Hatchet Jack’s Sport Shop (501-758-4958) said crappie are fair on pink minnows and jigs fished in 12 to 14 feet of water. Bass are fair on spinnerbaits and topwater lures early in the morning and late in the evening. No report on catfish or bream.

About: - Lake Maumelle has an area of 8,900 acres covering an area of 14 square miles and a 70-mile shoreline. No swimming is allowed but boating and fishing are popular pursuits. The lake is well-known for the many sailing regattas it hosts and is used extensively by weekend skippers as well.

Fishing: Bass, catfish, crappie, stripers and bream lure anglers with a 55-pound and a 92-pound black buffalo having been pulled from its waters.

Location: Lake Maumelle is approximately 12 miles northwest of Little Rock.
