Try drifting worms through pools for stocked trout or worms, spinners, or streamers for resident brown trout. The lower river near the campground is open to statewide regulations, but the upper reaches, from Hayground Creek to the Apache Indian reservation boundary, are open to catch-and-release fishing only, with artificial lure and fly. | About: -
Situated in east
central Arizona in Greelee, Graham and Gila Counties, the Black River flows
through Apache Sitgreaves National Forest and the San Carlos Apache Reservation
near the towns of Eagar, Alpine and Fort Apache.
The alpine settings surrounding the Black River consist of spruce and fir
forests in the White Mountains.
Best known for trout fishing, the Black River
maybe Arizona's best smallmouth bass fishery.
The upper stretches of the rivers are inhabited
with Apache trout, rainbows and browns in the middle sections, brown trout in
the lower mountain stretches, and a mix of bass and trout in the lowest
stretches.
Regulations: The Black River has sections that are subject to
catch-and-release regulations. A tribal permit is required.
Directions: From Show Low go southeast on Highway 60 to Springerville.
If you want to access the West Fork, take a look at the NF map. Access is by way of dirt roads and
FWD vehicle is advisable. If you want
to access the East Fork, continue south from Springerville on 180/191. You can
then access the river easiest from Hannagan Meadow or from Alpine on several
forest roads. You can also reach the East Fork as it crosses Forest Road 249,
and as it parallels Forest Road 276 further south.
