: Little Red River: Mike Winkler of Little Red River Fly Fishing Trips/Little Red River Fly Guides (501-507-3688) said, Just got back from a few days on the water, and let me tell you, its been quite the adventure out there! The Southwestern Power Administration has been keeping us on our toes with their water release schedule. Theyve been running two units of water through the turbines consistently, although the start and stop times have been a bit unpredictable. With that said, Ive been having some solid luck fishing near the dam using a deep-water nymph rig set between 9-12 feet deep. Those deep pockets have been holding some nice surprises. And, for a change of pace, Ive been trying my luck around the docks, casting a pink San Juan Worm about 6-7 feet deep into the moss beds. Its been paying off, especially in the slower deep-water sections. Hot flies have been pink San Juan Worms, Pheasant Tail soft hackle and caddis flies. Oh, and if youre into streamer fishing, nows the time to be out there. The high-water release has really got those streamer bites going strong. So, grab your gear, check the schedule and lets hit the water! Fish N Stuff (501-834-5733) in Sherwood said Thursday that trout anglers are doing pretty well on the tailwater. They care catching a lot of trout on Rapala Countdowns and Rooster Tails. The preferred colors have been brown trout or rainbow trout lately, and successful anglers are targeting the shoals or a laydown log, any visible cover. Reported by: Arkansas F&G |

Little Red River: One of the most popular blue ribbon fishing
and floating streams in Arkansas, the lower Little Red River are the
tailwaters of Greers Ferry Dam near the town of Heber Springs. The
Little Red eventually merges with the White River at the Hurricane
Lake Wildlife Management Area just east of Searcy.
The Ozark scenery is outstanding, and can offset one of those rare
occasions when the fish aren't biting. The river is regularly
stocked and for the most part fishes well all year round. In the
cooler winter months larger browns tend to be more active.
The all-tackle, world record brown (40 pounds, 4 ounces) was caught in May 1992 in the Little Red River below Greers Ferry Lake by H. Rip Collins. Access: The Corps of Engineers public ramp is located the north bank, next to the Federal Fish Hatchery, may be the easiest access to the upper portion of the river. Other public access points on the middle and lower stretches of the river. maintained by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, include Barnett (Winkley Bridge), Lobo (adjacent to Lobo Landing Trout Dock, Dripping Springs, and Ramsey. Four commercial boat docks also offer launch ramps. Please note most of the land bordering the river is privately-owned and is posted. |
