North Tongue River
Seasons: Fishing allowed year-round, ice usually
clears around mid-April.
Special Regulations: North Tongue River drainage
upstream from the mouth of Bull Creek in Sheridan County. All Trout (except
Brook Trout) shall be released to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by
the use of artificial flies and lures only.
State-wide regulations apply downstream from Bull Creek mouth.
Access: Highway 14 to Highway 14a, river parallels
highway.
Camping: North Tongue Campground or dispersed
camping is allowed outside of the riparian zone.
Comments: Snake River Cutthroat are stocked
annually in the restricted harvest area.
South Tongue River
Seasons: Fishing allowed year-round, ice usually
clears around mid-April.
Access: Highway 14 to Prune Creek Campground and
South on Forest Development Road 193. Also highway 14 to FDR 26. Fish downstream
from Dead Swede CG.
Camping: Dead Swede, Owen Creek, Prune Creek,
Sibley Lake, Tie Flume Campgrounds or dispersed camping is allowed outside of
the riparian zone.
Comments: The South Tongue River has been managed
as a wild (no stocking) trout fishery since 1991. Recent fish population
estimates, conducted after stocking was discontinued, indicate that wild
Rainbow, Brown and Brook trout populations range between 4,000 and 5,000 trout
per mile, 65 to 75% of which are greater than 6 inches long.
