Conditions
: STONECOAL LAKE The lake is slightly below normal pool as we are working on replacing the courtesy dock on the Upshur County boat launch. The Lewis County boat launch is fully functional. Bass are in about ten feet of water and reports of lots of fish being caught. Crappie, Bluegill, and Yellow Perch fishing is picking up. A few Muskies have been caught trolling and casting to tree piles. The Walleye bite is good, a few lunker-sized fish have been reported recently. Stonecoal Lake is located south of U.S. 33 and 119 between Weston and Buckhannon. The lake is
accessible from state Routes 15, 36 and 7. Hardwood forests cover 80 percent of
the area with the remaining areas in wildlife clearings and brushy fields. Stonecoal Lake,
550 acres, offers excellent angling opportunities for muskellunge, largemouth
and smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, channel catfish and bluegill, as well as
rainbow, golden and brown trout. Accommodations:
Provided for the physically disabled. Concrete boat ramps are located at both
ends of the lake and motors are restricted to 10 horsepower. Camping, swimming and open fires are not
permitted. A private campground is located near the headwaters of the lake.
