About: -
Watauga Lake is 16 miles long, and has a shoreline of 109 miles, and located east of
Elizabethton and southwest of Mountain City. The US Forest Service manages more than half of the shoreline on the 6,430-acre
lake, which is located about 2,000 feet above sea level. Most of the developed recreational facilities are located
along the southern shore. Lake-goers can canoe, swim, fish, ride a sailboat, water ski or skim the
waves in a Jet Ski. Pontoon boats are also available for rent. Various public
facilities located along Highway 321 offer some or all of the following:
swimming, picnicking, hiking, fishing, camping and boat launch ramps. Nominal
day-use fees and campsite fees may apply, for more information about Watauga
Lake's public facilities, contact the Cherokee National Forest at (423)
735-1500.
