: RIO COSTILLA: The department recently stocked 90,000 Rio Grande cutthroat trout, including 1,000 catchable-sized fish, into Costilla Creek and its tributaries as part of a long-term project to expand the distribution of Rio Grande cutthroat trout in 120 miles of the Costilla watershed in northern New Mexico. The department anticipates stocking Rio Grande cutthroat trout into this area over the next several years to assist with establishing a self-sustaining population of Rio Grande cutthroat trout. About: -
Costilla Creek: may be New Mexico's best cutthroat stream.
Costilla Creek begins just below the Colorado border and journeys south to Costilla Reservoir through Vermejo Ranch and then
west into Carson National Forest. The Costilla is restricted on flies and lures only and has a two bag limit. In the Valle Vidal
section a Wildlife Habitat Improvement Stamp in required.($10.00 as of this writing) Because of
fluctuating flows from the reservoir,
fishing during weekdays can be hit and miss. Water releases are normally shut off in late September. Fishing consistently remains good into the
October and November. The Costilla can be fished year round (in hip waders), but fishing June - October seeming to be the most productive period.
The Costilla is about 40 miles north of Taos, however the lodging and camping may be more
convenient in the town of San Luis, Colorado.
