Conditions : Bruneau River - Flows are very low and fishing is poor. Fish are occasionally hitting dry flies and with the low flows, fishing nymphs is almost impossible except in the pools and spring heads. Hoppers, yellow stimulators, yellow or tan elk hair caddis, ant and beetle patterns should all work where fish can be found. Expect poor fishing here due to low water all summer. As of September 30, the Bruneau River was flowing at a low 3.5 cfs well below the median of 16 cfs.

About: - The Bruneau River  is roughly 50 miles in length, 29 miles of which are fishable. Flows of 826 cfs in the spring and 14 cfs in the fall were recorded in 1998.  Creel census recorded a catch rate on the redband of 1.4 fish per hour with an average size of 10.3 inches with a  range of 7.0 to 13.5 inches. Best Time of Year to Fish: July, following run-off, through October. Most productive methods are live worms, power bait, flies and small spinners. The fishing is primarily on the lower section of the stream between the Copper Creek confluence downstream to the McDonald Creek confluence.

Camping: Primitive camping opportunities on the Forest Service side of the stream. Stocking - The redband and the mountain whitefish are self-sustaining populations.

Misc Info: - Regulations – All of the East Carson River has general fishing regulations, fishing is permitted any hour of the day or night and the fishing season is open year round. The limit is 5 trout, 10 mountain whitefish, and 15 warmwater game fish of which not more than 5 may be black bass.

Boating Regulations – There are no special boating regulations for the East Carson River. During spring runoff, raft and kayak trips are a popular recreation and many guided trips begin near Markleeville, CA and end at Ruhenstroth Dam. All rafters must exit above Ruhenstroth Dam.
