Conditions : Simpson County Lake: BASS fishing is best early and late on plastics. Fish water 8-10 feet deep for midrange bass. Big bass remain deep, but there are a lot of fish 10 pounds and up in this lake.

BREAM are beginning to pick up with cooler water. Fish on boat ramp side of the large tee shaped pier near the camping area entrance. A local angler was catching two pound redear off the small tee pier near the pavilion this week.

CRAPPIE fishermen are using minnows along the levee in a boat. Catch rates are getting better with the cooler temperatures.

CATFISH bite is pretty good at night. Lots of fish were left from the rodeo. Simpson has really made a name for itself with catfish over the last few years.

About: - Simpson County Lake has produced several trophy largemouth bass in recent years including a whopping 13 pounder in February 2005. During spring 2005, the average bass kept by anglers weighed 1.6 pounds. The average weight for harvested bass in agency-owned lakes is 1.7 pounds, putting Simpson right up there with the best of them. Unfortunately, anglers only took out 16% of the bass they caught. Over the last few years, bass anglers are harvesting fewer bass. This trend must change, or the bass population will overpopulate, growth will slow and the average size will decrease.

Bream anglers made up the majority of anglers (74%) during spring 2005. Anglers harvested 82% of the bream that were caught. Crappie anglers should enjoy the deep water fish attractors that have been established and marked for anglers to easily find. These attractors are loaded with Christmas trees and serve as a “hot spot” for anglers and provide habitat for most all fish species.

Simpson County Lake is heavily used by local anglers. Sixty-seven percent lived in Simpson County and Rankin County residents made up 16% of the anglers.

Check out the fish attractor buoys. Since 2000 Christmas trees and tree tops have been placed around each buoy. We put 400 more trees out in January 2005.
