Conditions : Simpson County Lake - No new report. Bass fishing has been slow. Try targeting bass along ledges and depth changes with crankbaits and soft plastics. Brush piles should also be holding fish. Try working jigs or Texas rigged creature baits around the brushpiles. Some bass are starting to be seen shallow.

No new report. Crappie fishing has been poor. Try targeting crappie on drop offs and deep water brush piles. Crappie are likely to be scattered with some fish being suspended while others are holding to the bottom. Try live minnows or jigs in cajun cricket or electric chicken.

No new report. Bream fishing has been slow. Anglers have had success with red worms fished on bottom.

No new report. Catfishing has been poor. Try tightlining kool-aid soaked chicken or livers in deep water near the dam.

About: - Simpson County Lake has produced several trophy largemouth bass in recent years including a whopping 13 pounder in February 2005. During spring 2005, the average bass kept by anglers weighed 1.6 pounds. The average weight for harvested bass in agency-owned lakes is 1.7 pounds, putting Simpson right up there with the best of them. Unfortunately, anglers only took out 16% of the bass they caught. Over the last few years, bass anglers are harvesting fewer bass. This trend must change, or the bass population will overpopulate, growth will slow and the average size will decrease.

Bream anglers made up the majority of anglers (74%) during spring 2005. Anglers harvested 82% of the bream that were caught. Crappie anglers should enjoy the deep water fish attractors that have been established and marked for anglers to easily find. These attractors are loaded with Christmas trees and serve as a “hot spot” for anglers and provide habitat for most all fish species.

Simpson County Lake is heavily used by local anglers. Sixty-seven percent lived in Simpson County and Rankin County residents made up 16% of the anglers.

Several fish attractors have been established in the lake to create fish habitat and a hot spot for anglers. Approximately 200 Christmas trees were added to the sites in January 2011, and most attractors are marked with buoys.
