This site along the Salmon River was named for an old mining community in the area and provides plenty of fishing opportunities, but no boating facilities.

Location: Approximately 10 miles southwest of Challis, Idaho. Travel south from Challis on Highway 93 for 2 miles, turn right onto Highway 75 and drive southwest for approximately 8 miles. The recreation site will be on your right between the highway and the Salmon River.

• 11 campsites • Camping fee: $10/night • Drinking water • 1 double vault toilet • Garbage collection • Interpretative panels • RV/bus parking • Use season: year-round • No horses allowed in camp area

Cottonwood Recreation Site

This site along the scenic Salmon River sits among groves of cottonwoods and provides a beautiful setting for fishing and camping. It was renovated in 1998 to allow use of RVs and to provide accessible camp sites and includes a day use area with barbecues, tent sites, and group camp sites.

Location: Approximately 14 miles north of Challis, Idaho. Travel north from Challis on Highway 93 for approximately 14 miles. The recreation site will be on your left between the highway and the Salmon River.

• Fire rings/grills
• 2 sets of vault toilets
• Boat launch and parking
• Potable water
• Trailer dump station
• Day use area with horse shoe pits and reservable covered group shelter ($25, call Challis Field Office at 208-879-6200 for reservation)

• Year-round use
• Campground hosts are present mid-May to October

East Fork Recreation Site

This area is nestled between the Main Salmon River and the mouth of the East Fork of the Salmon River and encompasses a 20-mile segment of the East Fork Salmon River that is “eligible” for inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The site is popular during the summer months and offers diverse recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, camping, nature viewing and hiking along four nearby trailheads (Sheep Creek, Jimmy Smith Lake Trailhead, Herd Creek and Little Boulder Creek Trailhead).

Location: Approximately 19 miles southwest of Challis, Idaho and 4 miles north of Clayton, Idaho. Travel south from Challis on Highway 93 for 2 miles, turn right on Highway 75 and drive southwest approximately 17 miles. East Fork will be on your right at the confluence of the East Fork and main Salmon Rivers.
