Conditions
: JOHN DAY RIVER: Weather and river conditions remain highly variable. The John Day has generally been slightly murky, but steelhead are being caught. Fishing has been a little slow likely due to river conditions, and long-term weather outlook is calling for more precipitation in the coming weeks. River visibility will likely continue to vary, but shouldn't preclude fishing. ? Bass fishing is still an option, but fishing will likely be slow until the spring. JOHN DAY RIVER : ATTENTION ANGLERS Because of the failing structural integrity, the bridge across the John Day River at the Flat Creek access to the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area and road south of the bridge is closed to motor vehicles. Access to this part of the Wildlife Area, which includes Aldrich Ponds, is by foot only until the bridge is repaired. Parking at this access point is very limited and confined to the approach off of Highway 26. Walk-in access to Aldrich Ponds is also available from the Aldrich Lookout road at Cabbage Patch ( Forest Road 2150). The ponds are closed to angling until May 22, 2004 .
