| About: -
Saylorville Lake is a 5,400 surface acre U.S.C.O.E flood control reservoir on
the Des Moines River, located just north of the city of Des Moines. This area is
a major multi-use recreational area in central Iowa. There are a number of
camping areas around the reservoir, a visitor center near the dam, bike trails
and hiking trails, and several nature areas adjacent to the reservoir. Five
multi-lane boat ramps allow easy access to many areas on the reservoir. There
are no outboard or boat size restrictions on the lake.
There are a variety of fishing opportunities in the lake. Crappie is one of
the more commonly sought species, with most in the 8-10 inch range. The white
bass fishery has increase substantially in the past few years and has provided a
good summer fisher. Wipers (a hybrid ocean striped bass x white bass), looks
similar to the white bass, however these fish can reach 10 pound or more, and
provide an exciting trophy fishery. Walleye/sauger provide some excellent
fishing and largemouth bass add variety to the fishery. Northern pike and
bluegill are also present in the lake. Channel catfish and flathead catfish
round out a diverse and interesting fishery.
